Barong is the
symbol of good, while Rangda symbolize evil. The Barong is represented as a
gigantic animal like a lion, but kindhearted, his whole body is covered with
long hairs. It is danced by two man : one at his head and the other at the last
part of his back. In this way he looks like a quadruped. The dancer at the back
has only to follow the movements of the dancer at the head, so that their movements
are in harmony with one another.
Rangda is a powerful an bad female giant,
danced by a man with a mask, big eyes, protruding teeth and her canine teeth
bend side wards, long and pointed, while her tongue too is long and hanging
out. Her hair is long reaching to the ground. Rangda is very much feared but
also respected, for she is regarded to be holy. She may destroy everything she
dislikes which is also the fact with regard to the worship of Dewa Siwa. People
are very much afraid of, but they are also very respectful to Dewa Siwa, for he
has the power to destroy everything in this world he does not like, but he also
make new things. On fixed holy days the Barong and Rangda are carried (on the
head)to the temple. Under the accompagniment of the thundering sound of the
gamelan, the Barong-Dance fighting Rangda is being performed, ending with the
Barong's victory. This means, that good always triumphs over evil.
